A BOX OF JOY CHANGED MY LIFE

MEET HAMILTON

Hamilton is eleven and attends the fourth grade at the school in the little community of Media Legua, Guatemala.  When Hamilton was only a baby, his father died, leaving his mother, Angelica, alone with three children.  They became very poor and had no place to stay, so they moved in with her mother-in-law.  Life has been a struggle because of poverty and Hamilton’s illness.  He had meningitis (infection of the brain), which causes him to have seizures and a problem with his hand, so he cannot pick things up.  Hamilton also lost an eye during an accident and he cannot speak.  Hamilton’s mom was extremely grateful to God and for touching the heart of the person who sent the Box of Joy because it had been years since the last time she was able to give her son a gift.  She was also grateful to Father Raul Monterosso who prayed for the children and encouraged them during the Box of Joy celebration event at Hamilton’s school.

MEET DULCE MARIA

When 4-year-old Dulce Maria opened her box, she pulled out the doll inside and immediately gave her new “baby” a hug and a kiss. Providentially, the doll she received looked just like her — right down to the pink dress they both were wearing! Grinning from ear to ear, little Dulce received her very first Christmas present. Thank you showing this precious little one the love of Christ through a simple gift!

MEET FRANCISCO

On A Box of Joy Distribution Day, Cross Catholic President Jim Cavnar befriended Francisco, an 8-year-old soccer enthusiast. In Francisco’s box, he received a soccer ball and pump! He immediately pumped up his ball and played a quick game with the other boys. When he was finished, he brought the ball back to Jim and asked him to remove the air from the ball. “I want to keep it safe and use it when I’m older,” he explained. Jim was impressed by this boy’s willingness to experience delayed gratification. This soccer ball quickly became one of his most prized possessions.
