Each day 800 million people go to bed hungry and each year more than 6 million children under five die from malnutrition. Access to safe water is literally a matter of life and death, and a crisis that must be addressed immediately. Today about one million children are orphaned by genocide and war, more than 13 million children have lost parents due to the AIDS pandemic sweeping across sub-Saharan Africa, and countless children are abandoned by parents too poor or too sick to feed or care for them. More than 100 million homeless families around the world are desperate to escape the harsh elements, to tuck their children into their own beds, and to have a safe, clean shelter they can call "home." In developing countries with high rates of illiteracy, education equips the poor to gain employment and improve their economic condition. People die every day in developing countries from fevers, infections and vitamin deficiencies left untreated because basic medicines or nutritional supplements are not available.
