Cross Catholic and Vatican Officials Exchange Visits to Discuss Charitable Collaborations

Boca Raton, Florida (Thursday, January 28, 2013) — Leaders of Cross Catholic Outreach (www.crosscatholic.org)  exchanged visits last week with top Vatican (www.vatican.va) officials to discuss their shared charitable collaboration projects through the Pontifical Council Cor Unum (Pontifical Cor Unum).

On January 19 President James J. Cavnar of Cross Catholic Outreach and Cross Catholic Outreach Director of Clergy and Diocesan Relations Monsignor Ted Bertagni were invited to be among the 80 attendees from charitable agencies and ministries worldwide who participated in the three-day XXIX Plenary Assembly of Pontifical Council Cor Unum.

The theme of the Assembly was "Charity, Christian Anthropology and the New Global Ethics.” Cardinal Robert Sarah, president, Pontifical Council Cor Unum, and the Vatican official charged with representing Pope Benedict XVI to Catholic charitable organizations, introduced the Assembly. Among those presenting was Hector Quesada of Gawad Kalinga [“Give Care”], whose goal is to eradicate poverty for five million families by 2024  (Gawad Kalinga).  Mr. Quesada spoke about “A Project of Reconstruction of Communities and Families  in the Philippines” that Cross Catholic Outreach is supporting.  Mr. Quesada referred to Cross as one of the "miracles" that came into his life and ministry, noting that “for the past nine years Cross Catholic Outreach has funded about 35 homes every year. They have also funded the operation of our various programs.”

Jim Cavnar was among those invited to greet Pope Benedict personally when attendees were received by the Holy Father in a private audience in the Papal Apartments. Mr. Cavnar thanked Pope Benedict for his guidance and teachings about charity as it relates to the church, and they spoke briefly about their charitable collaboration.  Mr. Cavnar was also interviewed on Rome Reports (Jim Cavnar Interview on Rome Reports) and Vatican Radio (Jim Cavnar Interview on Vatican Radio).

On January 25 Cardinal Robert Sarah, president of Pontifical Cor Unum, visited the Cross Catholic Outreach offices in Boca Raton and Pompano Beach, Florida. The Cardinal and Cross Catholic officials reviewed the rapid progress of their 2012 partnership to construct a health center in Kenya, Africa.  As of November 26 the facility was 99% completed.  (Catholic News Service News Brief About Kenya Project).  They also discussed the planned construction of an estimated 17 homes and a Catholic chapel in Guatemala, building a Catholic Church in Haiti and a charitable project in Latin America.
