The Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord

Sunday Mass Readings: Isaiah 60:1-6; Psalm 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-11, 12-13; Ephesians 3:2-3a; 5-6; Matthew 2:1-12

The Epiphany

Epiphany is an important feast day for Catholics around the world. On this day, we celebrate the three wise men who followed a star all the way to Bethlehem to meet baby Jesus. They presented Jesus with three gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh. The gifts of the wise men represent important spiritual elements in the Christmas story:

  • Gold symbolizes Jesus’ kingship. He is the King of kings!
  • Frankincense is used in worship, so this symbolizes Jesus’ divinity. He is God!
  • Myrrh is a burial spice, foreshadowing his sacrificial death. He is our Redeemer!

Epiphany is also known as “Three Kings Day” in many countries. People give gifts and bless their homes for the year to come. We recognize that it is God who brings all blessings! Can you think of three things or people you are thankful for? Draw a picture of one on a piece of paper.

An Epiphany Prayer

Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus to dwell with us. May we reflect his light and love to others in the year to come, being faithful to share the message of the Gospel with anyone who walks into our home. We pray for blessings and protection for our family. May we grow together in unity and serve each other daily. In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, amen.
