The Importance of Fellowship
Fellowship is a common theme throughout the Bible, particularly in the New Testament after Christ’s ascension into heaven as new believers joined together to form churches. The words of Hebrews 10:24-25, for example, discuss the importance of fellowship among believers: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
It’s clear that a large part of having faith involves communing with other believers, like worshipping, sharing ideas, and encouraging each other to follow Christ’s teachings in our daily lives. Here at Cross Catholic we bring fellowship into the workplace through our daily devotions.
The leaders of the youth outreach program help children make good life choices.
We also enjoy seeing our ministry partners in the field find new and creative ways to promote Christ-centered fellowship among the poor they serve. One of our favorite examples is in Mozambique at a ministry called Reencontro, a ministry that serves orphans and vulnerable children.
As part of its work to alleviate poverty and suffering among orphans and vulnerable children, Reencontro has a dynamic and faith-based outreach program for local youth. Led by energetic 20-somethings, many of whom grew up in Reencontro’s programs, the outreach program’s main goal is to help boys and girls make good life choices.
Topics include faith, marriage, HIV/AIDS, drugs and alcohol, poverty, education, careers, and much more. The program helps kids understand that the choices they make affect their lives—and the activities and discussions help them make positive and faith-minded decisions.
This kind of constructive fellowship serves two purposes: to help children lead better lives and to help strengthen their faith in Christ. It’s a great example of the kind of fellowship expressed in 1 John 1:7: “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”
