New Home = Free Heart

Last year we funded a housing project in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. This year we got to visit the beneficiaries of those new homes. One of them, 56-year-old Berhane, was especially grateful. Until Sr. Abeba of the Daughters of Charity helped her, she had been living in the streets. Everyone knew she was HIV positive and they treated her very badly. Sr. Abeba helped her get off the streets and into an apartment but Berhane was still tormented. She explained, “Before the house was ready, my landlord insulted me. I was treated like a slave. The house was like a miracle; it gave me a free heart. I thank the Lord day and night for this gift!”

Thanks to Sr. Abeba (middle), Berhane (left) is off the cruel streets and in a safe home of her own in a caring community.
