Palm Sunday Craft for Kids: Hosanna Palm Branches

Kick-Off Holy Week

In the first Gospel reading for Palm Sunday in Matthew 21:1-11, Jesus makes his Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. Waving their palm branches, the people shout:

“Hosanna to the Son of David!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!” (Matthew 21:9)

You can make this story come alive for your children with a fun Palm Sunday craft. You only need a few materials to get started.

Materials Needed

  • Several sheets of green construction paper
  • A large popsicle stick or tongue depressor
  • Glue or tape
  • Stickers, markers or other decorations (optional)

Note: Any of these items can be substituted for something similar. For instance, a ruler could be used in the place of a popsicle stick. Be creative when collecting your items!

  1. Fold the construction paper into quarters.
  2. Using a marker, crayon or pencil, trace your child’s hand on the construction paper.
  3. Using the scissors, cut around the outline of the hand. When you are finished cutting, you should have four green hands.
  4. Repeat steps two and three for as many palm leaves as you want.
  5. Glue the hands to the popsicle stick.
  6. Decorate the palm branch with markers, stickers and other decorations of your choice.
  7. Read Matthew 21:1-11 as a family. Wave your palm branch when the crowd says “Hosanna!”
  8. Pray together as a family and thank God that Jesus came to earth to humbly serve and give his life for the redemption of his people.
