In October 2022, the West Virginia Knights of Columbus hosted a food packing event that provided 49,032 meals for families in the Dominican Republic and another 12,096 meals for local families in West Virginia — a total of 61,128 meals for the vulnerable!

This event was hosted at the Mountaineer Challenge Academy at Camp Dawson, which allowed cadets to join in this Corporal Work of Mercy to feed the hungry. Some of the cadets had grown up in the same communities that would receive the local meals, and some had benefited from such meals in the past themselves. It was extremely meaningful to witness these young people growing in discipline, serving others and walking in the plans that God has for them.

Cross Catholic Outreach extends special thanks to Ned Sawyers, who has championed the Knights’ mission to feed the hungry. He even set a personal goal to pack 1 million meals in his lifetime! Ned has encouraged many others to support this mission of mercy, and his enthusiastic service has provided a powerful example for the next generation — including his own daughter and granddaughter, who both attended the event.
