BOCA RATON, Fla. – Nov. 15, 2023 – Cross Catholic Outreach announced today a partnership with David Henrie (“Wizards of Waverly Place” and “How I Met Your Mother”), an actor, producer, director and screenwriter, who will serve as the Florida-based nonprofit’s Box of Joy brand ambassador.
“We’re excited to partner with David, a faithful Catholic, devoted father and husband, and accomplished actor, who has a heart for helping those in need,” said Cross Catholic Outreach President Michele Sagarino. “We look forward to working with David to fulfill our mission to inspire Catholics nationwide to donate Box of Joy gifts and bless impoverished children throughout the world and lift up their hearts this Christmas season.”
“I couldn’t be more honored and excited to begin this journey around the world with Cross Catholic Outreach to help the poor and provide them with Box of Joy gifts,” Henrie said. “During these difficult times, it’s easy to forget about those who need us the most, in particular the poor and their affected communities. The call to help the poor and provide them with joy is a universal one united around love of neighbor. Providing an impoverished child with a Box of Joy is a reminder of the ultimate gift we have been given — that of God’s love. It’s my hope that you and many more will answer the call and join me this holiday season in encouraging your family and friends to donate a Box of Joy.”

A Box of Joy is a Christmas shoebox that is donated and packed with toys, clothing, school supplies and other treasured items. Each child who receives a Box of Joy also receives a rosary and a booklet in their own language that tells The Story of Jesus. Box of Joy provides hope to children in need, and each gift represents Christ’s love, and may be the first and only Christmas gift they receive.
Henrie is an actor, director and Emmy-nominated producer who has been in the entertainment business for more than 25 years. He started acting at the age of 9, and has starred in more than 200 episodes of TV shows and a dozen films. He’s won two Emmys for his starring role in Disney’s “Wizards of Waverly Place,” and has built up over 12 million followers on social media, which makes him one of the most followed Catholics in the world. Most recently, Henrie directed Mel Gibson and Mason Thames in a feature film called “Boys of Summer,” which premiers in 2024. He lives in Coeur D’alene, Idaho, with his wife and three children.
Cross Catholic Outreach is an official Vatican-endorsed Catholic ministry that partners with bishops, priests, religious and lay workers to aid the poor and vulnerable children and families in international communities. Its mission aligns with what Pope Francis said about helping the poor during his trip to Hungary earlier this year: “It is not enough to provide bread to fill stomachs; we need to fill people’s hearts. Charity is much more than material and social assistance. It has to do with the whole person; it strives to put people back on their feet with the love of Jesus: a love that helps them to recover their beauty and their dignity.”
