How We Can Pray for Haiti

For many years, our Haitian brothers and sisters have endured heartbreak after heartbreak, and the poorest families in this developing country are often the hardest hit. These crises have ranged from devastating natural disasters — including deadly earthquakes in 2010 and 2021 — to recent waves of social unrest, gang violence and uncertainty about the future.

In the midst of these challenges, Catholic leaders continue to serve Haiti’s poorest families every day — often at great personal risk — with love and fortitude anchored in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. At Cross Catholic Outreach, we have heartfelt concern for these partners and the precious families they minister to in Haiti.

In this blog, we’ll share:

  • Pope Francis’ response to the situation in Haiti.
  • Powerful prayers to join in solidarity with Haitian families.
  • Reflections on how the Church continues to share hope.

The Holy Father’s Response to Haiti

After a recent Sunday Angelus, Pope Francis greeted a crowd of Catholic pilgrims and tourists in Vatican City and shared a message about the situation in Haiti.

“I follow with concern and sorrow the grave crisis afflicting Haiti,” said the Holy Father. “I am close to the Church and to the dear Haitian population, which has been plagued by many sufferings for years.”

Pope Francis invites us to pray for peace in Haiti through the intercession of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, the patron saint of Haiti. Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a 15th-century Byzantine icon that depicts the Virgin Mary holding the child Jesus. The icon features a young Jesus after he appears to have run into the arms of his mother for her consolation and protection so quickly that his sandal has fallen off. Several miracles are attributed to this beautiful icon, and Catholics worldwide celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of Perpetual Help every year on June 27.

The Holy Father said, “I invite you to pray, by the intercession of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, that every sort of violence may cease, and that everyone may offer their contribution to the growth of peace and reconciliation in the country, with the renewed support of the international community.”

A Prayer for Haiti Through Our Lady of Perpetual Help

Mother of Perpetual Help, you have been blessed and favored by God.
You became not only the Mother of the Redeemer,
but the Mother of the redeemed as well.
We come to you today to ask for your help.
Watch over our brothers and sisters in Haiti and take care of them.
As you held the child Jesus in your loving arms, so take the nation of Haiti in your arms.
Be a mother ready at every moment to comfort those most in need.
Intercede for us, dear Mother, in obtaining peace for Haiti, and nurture a lasting hope.
Give the people of Haiti the perseverance and grace to always call upon you.
Mother of Perpetual Help, pray for Haiti!

Additional Marian Prayers

Sub Tuum Praesidium

Sub Tuum Praesidium (Beneath Thy Protection) is an ancient Marian prayer that scholars date back to the third century. In fact, it’s the oldest known prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary! Originally written in Greek, this prayer invites us to ask Our Lady for help during challenging times, such as what families in Haiti face.

Sub Tuum Praesidium

We fly to thy protection,
O Holy Mother of God.
Despise not our petitions in our necessities,
but deliver us always from all dangers,
O glorious and blessed Virgin.

The Memorare

The Memorare has been a popular prayer since the 17th century and possibly dates back as early as the 12th century. It can be included in your daily prayers and also during times of distress.

The Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known
that anyone who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help,
or sought thy intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence
I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.
To thee do I come,
before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in thy mercy hear and answer me.

The Church Brings Hope to Haiti

Cross Catholic Outreach works with a network of Catholic priests, sisters and lay ministry workers in Haiti who have dedicated their lives to serving poor children and families and sharing the hope of Christ with everyone they encounter. These incredible Catholic leaders address challenges with great faith. They are moved by God’s call to love the poor, and despite the immense hardships they encounter, they continue to persevere in providing food, safe homes, clean water, education and agricultural assistance — as well as the love of Christ — to those who are most in need.

Haitian families also remain resilient and deeply faithful. They turn to their Church leaders for guidance, solace and practical assistance.

As we witness the struggles in Haiti, we must continue to stand in solidarity with the brave and selfless men and women serving the poor. We kindly ask you to include these brave and selfless Catholic leaders in your prayers, knowing our Lord can respond in ways big and small.

Proceeds from this campaign will be used to cover any expenditures incurred through June 30, 2024, the close of our ministry’s fiscal year. In the event that more funds are raised than needed to fully fund the project, the excess funds, if any, will be used to meet the most urgent needs of the ministry.
