Cross Catholic Outreach Receives Generous Donation from the Miami Dolphins to Aid in Box of Joy® Initiative

BOCA RATON, FL – June 15, 2024 – Florida-based global relief nonprofit Cross Catholic Outreach recently received a pleasant surprise: an early Christmas gift from its home-state neighbor, the Miami Dolphins. The football team sent the ministry four cartons filled with Dolphins swag, including shirts, towels, journals, stickers, bracelets and hats to benefit poverty-stricken kids in Guatemala, Malawi and other developing countries. This donation will be used in Cross Catholic Outreach’s Box of Joy ministry, which provides gifts to children who, in many cases, have never received a Christmas present before.

“We are immensely grateful to the Miami Dolphins for their generous contribution to our Box of Joy program.  It will provide Christmas joy to hundreds of children living in extreme poverty,” said Michele Sagarino, president of Cross Catholic Outreach. “The Miami Dolphins team is well known around the world, and I’m sure the boys and girls who get these gifts will be thrilled to have them. They face very challenging circumstances, and these things will brighten their lives.”

Since Cross Catholic Outreach launched the Box of Joy ministry in 2014, U.S. Catholic parishes, schools, groups, families and individuals have united to bless children around the world with 646,163 Box of Joy gifts. Entering its 10th year, the ministry hopes to bless many more kids this upcoming Christmas season.

Over the past decade, the impact of these gifts has been deeply felt in communities across Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa. Last Christmas, Box of Joy blessed children in six poverty-stricken countries: Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, El Salvador, Honduras and Malawi.

Groups nationwide pack Box of Joy gifts — shoebox-sized boxes that contain small gifts such as toys and school supplies, apparel, accessories, and treats like hard candy and coloring books. The ministry adds a rosary and The Story of Jesus booklet to every box to remind children why Christmas is so special. Participants donate $9 per box to cover international shipment.

There is also an online option for sponsoring a Box of Joy for those who are too busy to pack a Box of Joy. The donation covers the cost of the gifts and shipping; Cross Catholic Outreach’s Team Joy volunteers will shop for the gifts and pack and ship the Box of Joy gifts on the donor’s behalf.

The 2024 Box of Joy campaign is underway, and groups deliver gifts to a network of hundreds of local drop-off centers during Box of Joy Week, Nov. 2-10. Any group that misses Box of Joy Week can ship their gifts to the National Box of Joy Screening Center in Miami.
