Family Activity: Lenten Pretzel Recipe

Did you know that pretzels have a Christian spiritual meaning? Christians in the Roman Empire adhered to strict fasting guidelines during their Lenten observance. To help them adhere to the fasting guidelines and devote themselves to prayer, they began making simple breads with water, flour and salt. Many sources also credit monks in the 7th century for giving the pretzel its famous shape. To reward their young students, monks made the bread look like arms crossed over the chest in prayer.
