Brian Gordon has been a member of the Knights of Columbus Carroll Council #504 in Wheeling, West Virginia, for 16 years.
He fell more deeply in love with Catholicism through the influences of his wife and Mother Angelica, a nun of the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration. As Brian was searching for a way to put his faith into action, he found the Knights of Columbus.
Being a member of the Knights, a men’s group that is uniquely and passionately Catholic, encourages Brian to live his Catholic faith more openly.
“It has also made me realize how important it is to hand the faith on to younger men and help them stay centered on Jesus Christ and the Catholic faith,” he said.
Since joining Council #504 in 2010, Brian has been an active member and served in several positions, including membership director, warden, deputy grand knight and grand knight. He also served as a district deputy, state warden, state treasurer and state secretary of West Virginia. He is currently the state deputy of West Virginia.
Food packing events are one way the Brother Knights from West Virginia answer Christ’s call to serve. They have held food packing events at least once a year since 2017 and packed close to 500,000 meals.
“I think the food packing events are the most fulfilling for me due to the lifesaving impact they have on people from villages where hunger ravages their lives,” Brian said. “Some of our councils also participate in the Box of Joy® program. These are also very fulfilling projects since they provide so much happiness to families and children during the Christmas season.”
Brian is clear on the Knights’ mission of caring for the needy and the outcast, as intended by their founder, Blessed Michael McGivney. He hopes that by putting their faith into action, his council is influencing other young men to do the same.
“Partnering with Cross Catholic Outreach provides a visible, tangible way for us to do that,” Brian noted.
The Knights’ partnership with Cross Catholic Outreach helps bring the community and different parishes together in commitment to spreading the Gospel through their actions.
Brian said, “This is how we lead the young into the generous service of their neighbor and build up [Christ’s] Body, which is the Church.”
