Gift Boxes for
In 2018, Catholics united through the Box of Joy ministry to send Christmas gifts to children in developing countries. For many poor children, a Box of Joy – filled with toys, clothing, school supplies, a rosary and the Story of Jesus – was the first Christmas gift they ever received.
The Box of Joy ministry provides teachers, parish leaders and other Catholic groups a unique opportunity for students, parishioners and group members to participate in a simple and tangible service experience that has both a material and spiritual impact on the poorest of the poor in developing countries.
Box of Joy is a way to demonstrate Christ’s compassion to poor children in developing countries. When families in the U.S. pack Boxes of Joy for children in poverty, it teaches generosity, thankfulness and cultivates a servant’s heart.
Through this experience, Catholic families gain a greater awareness of poverty and have the opportunity to take action.
“I can’t believe it,” 9-year-old Anita rejoiced after opening her very own Box of Joy. “I feel very happy! Nobody has ever given me so many things!” The Nicaraguan girl lives in extreme poverty and suffers from chronic respiratory problems that have stunted her growth. She often goes barefoot, because her one pair of shoes is only for school and the cost to replace them is too high. For a child with so few material possessions, a Box of Joy is a very special gift! Her mother, Hellin, who is raising Anita on her own, said she did not expect so much love and kindness!
