Lift a Haitian Child Out of Poverty Through Catholic Education

Equip them to achieve their dreams!

Securing a quality education is critical to families in Haiti seeking a path out of poverty.  In fact, their future success depends upon it.

Sadly, the poorest children often fall behind as their parents struggle to afford the cost of tuition, uniforms and school supplies. You can help stop this cycle by supporting the work of the Kobonal Haiti Mission in the Diocese of Hinche.

Your gift through Cross Catholic Outreach will bless at-risk boys and girls with a quality education, daily nutritious meals and the message that every child is precious in God’s eyes.

Kobonal Haiti Mission

About 30 years ago, Father Glenn Meaux was called by the Diocese of Hinche to found a mission in a rural area steeped in deep poverty and devoid of hope.

Today, the Kobonal Haiti Mission serves as a community hub reaching hundreds of families with material aid, economic empowerment and spiritual nourishment. In partnership with Cross Catholic Outreach, the Mission has provided food, water, shelter, medical care, education and microenterprise support to the poor. The hope that has blossomed in Kobonal is seen in the recent completion of a Mission medical clinic and beautiful new chapel — two developments that once seemed impossible. Still, much need remains!

One important tool in the Mission’s ongoing fight against poverty is its primary school. With your support, the school will provide more than 1,200 disadvantaged children with a Catholic education, daily meals and the hope to pursue their dreams of a life beyond abject poverty.

Students Depend on You

The children of Kobonal have dreams of rising out of poverty, starting careers and bringing prosperity to their families and communities. Your gift paves their path to a brighter tomorrow!

Meet Dieuline Brunit

Dieuline is a student at the Kobonal Haiti Mission. She likes to do gardening, and her favorite subject at school is math, but her biggest aspiration is to become a school director. “I want to contribute to children like Kobonal educated me,” she said. “I want to work at the Kobonal school.”

Clearly, her teachers have had a big impact on her, and not just in terms of career goals. She told us her favorite Bible verse is Psalm 46.“I like it because God is our protection, our refuge, and we are covered by him. I know if I read it at night, I’m covered by him.”

Student Dieuline trust in God’s protection as she works to achieve her dreams.

Committed Teachers

The Haitian teachers at the Mission school have a great responsibility. They are here to prepare the next generation for a brighter future. They are ready to impart an academic foundation along with the Catholic values of solidarity with neighbor and faithfulness to God — but they cannot succeed without your support!

Elina depends on your support for her first grade class at the Kobonal Haiti Mission school.
Meet Elina Elminor

Elina is a first grade teacher at the mission school. She is also a former student — as are many of the teachers and staff employed by the Mission. Elina has a kind, peaceful demeanor as she works with the children, whose upbringing in this poor, remote community mirrors her own. Unlike in the U.S., the ages of the children in her classroom can vary widely. Extreme poverty at home forces some Haitian students to delay their education for years, which means Elina must be prepared to handle adolescents as well as young children.

Elina sends her prayers to Cross Catholic Outreach because she knows the gifts from friends like you are meeting real needs in Kobonal and throughout Haiti. She knows that as God blesses you, those blessings will overflow into her home and community.

Meet Michelot

"Education is the way to success."

Michelot is a testament to the importance of education. He is a college graduate who teaches at the Kobonal Haiti Mission. But just a few years ago, he was a poor child struggling to survive in a rural Haitian village.

Education is the best way to break the cycle of poverty and right now an entire generation of children in Kobonal need your help to go to school. You can help lift a Haitian child out of poverty by providing a Catholic education today.

$185  /  sends a child to the Mission school for a full year.

$144  /  provides a scholarship for a graduate to go to secondary school.

Free daily nutritious school lunches ensure that students don’t go hungry and that they have the energy to focus on their studies and excel. The Mission’s school lunch program, which depends on your support as well as the produce harvested on the Mission’s own community farm, plays a critical role in preventing child malnutrition.
