Internal Communications Strategist

Position Summary:

Cross Catholic Outreach is an international humanitarian aid organization entering an exciting phase of growth and transition. Now among the nation’s top 50 nonprofit organizations and entering its third decade of operation, the company requires intentional internal communication strategies, structures and processes. The Internal Communications Strategist will play a significant role in helping develop and implement internal communications plans to ensure the success of ongoing strategic and change management initiatives — informing, inspiring, and engaging employees. While an overarching strategy and plan has been drafted, the ideal Internal Communications Strategist will expertly own and shape it while applying best practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create and shape a sustainable and engaging internal communications practice for a top 50 US nonprofit.
  • Establish a communications cascade structure and feedback loop to disseminate key messages and foster open dialogue among employees at all levels.
  • Initiate modern, consumer-friendly communication briefs, talking points and other collateral to employees that drives understanding around strategic planning, ministry and program inspiration, and change initiatives.
  • Consult with and support executives on key message development for strategic priorities, vision, corporate culture, and ministry updates.
  • Ensure internal key messages are consistent across all mediums and all departments while also aligning with external communication messages.
  • Develop interactive “Toolkits” to help managers communicate strategic objectives, key talking points and other updates to their teams.
  • Maintain an internal communication editorial and activities calendar to ensure that key knowledge, information and messaging is strategically and thoughtfully disseminated throughout the year.
  • Organize informal small-group discussions, i.e. “virtual fireside chats,” with Executive Team members to share updates and answer questions about change initiatives and other employee updates.
  • In collaboration with Human Resources, develop and implement training and learning activities, such as Lunch-n-Learns, that support strategic and change updates.
  • Create engaging, timely editorial content for digital displays (remote and on-site).
  • Partner with Human Resources to field and respond to anonymously-submitted suggestions, questions and concerns.
  • Collaborate with IT to leverage MS365 functionalities for optimal internal communication and access.
  • Assist the organization with implementing new communication protocols for emails and meetings.
  • Conduct an annual employee communication survey to measure the effectiveness of internal communication tactics, and apply insights to ongoing strategies.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Require/Preferred:

  • Ability to articulate complex ideas and relay the organization’s goals and values to employees in a straightforward, concise, and compelling manner.
  • Proven ability to create communication strategies to address specific challenges or goals.
  • Sound judgement and critical thinking skills; able to shift between big picture and detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; experience driving collaborative work relationships and gaining consensus through influence.
  • Reputation for functioning as a consultative expert, offering internal communications .advice to stakeholders across the organization, including executive level.
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
  • Experience using data analysis tools to monitor, measure, and modify communication efforts.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and prioritize independently; proactively manage complex problems with limited guidance.
  • Commitment to the ideals of Catholic Social Justice and Integral Human Development – providing aid and support spiritually as well as materially.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and experience collaborating on cloud-based shared documents.

Experience Requirements:

  • 5+ years equivalent work experience in an internal communications role for a company with at least 150 geographically dispersed employees.
  • This position can be remote, on-site in Southeast Florida, or hybrid.

Education or Certification Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Communications, Business or related major.
