Fighting Poverty with the Populorum Progressio Foundation
Pope John Paul II founded the Populorum Progressio Foundation in 1992 with the mission to show God’s love by serving the poor in Latin America and the Caribbean.
At the request of Cardinal Peter Turkson, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, Cross Catholic Outreach formed a partnership with the foundation in 2018. Since then, our ministry has funded a significant number of the Holy Father Pope Francis’ charitable and development projects.
We believe this united effort can help break the cycle of poverty and restore hope… but we need your help!
To effectively transform communities, we must address their most serious problems. For example, entire villages in Bolivia and Venezuela are currently struggling with hardships caused by contaminated drinking water. In Honduras and Guatemala, there is a lack of access to lifesaving medical care, and in Colombia and Haiti, families are struggling to put food on the table.
Bishops throughout Latin America and the Caribbean have identified and submitted some of the most pressing needs within their dioceses. Together, we can relieve these burdens by funding 16 critical development projects in seven countries.
By supporting agricultural programs, you can empower poor families with a sustainable source of both food and income. Your gift will provide struggling farmers with the tools they need to increase their self-sufficiency and care for God’s creation.
- PROJECT HIGHLIGHT -
Agricultural Strengthening in Colombia. This program will equip 30 women to sustainably plant, cultivate and harvest coffee beans. The Daughters of Charity will work closely with each beneficiary, training them in agroecological farming methods and empowering them to better support their families.Microenterprise initiatives provide hardworking men and women with the seed money, resources and skills training to operate small businesses. Your generosity will reward honest labor, restore dignity to poor families and help them achieve God’s best for their lives.
- PROJECT HIGHLIGHT -
Poultry Husbandry in Haiti. This program will help 1,500 women earn a sustainable living through poultry husbandry and egg sales. Your gift will equip beneficiaries with egg-laying hens, supporting materials and technical assistance to succeed.Medical care is often unaffordable or inaccessible to poor families — especially those living in remote rural communities. Join the Church in her mission to comfort the sick, save lives, and restore health and hope to those who need it most.
- PROJECT HIGHLIGHT -
Clinic Outreaches in Guatemala. This program will allow Zatti Clinic to serve up to 3,500 people over the next year, both at its physical location and through monthly medical outreaches. With your help, the clinic can provide rural Guatemalans with low-cost medicines, lab services and medical and psychological consultations.The gift of clean water transforms entire communities. Your support will provide safe drinking sources and improved sanitation to those in desperate need, vastly improving their health and hygiene.

Clean Water Systems in Venezuela. This program will bless 50 families in the Diocese of Margarita by giving them a self-sustaining water system and purifier. Proceeds from this campaign will be used to cover any expenditures incurred through June 30, 2023, the close of our ministry’s fiscal year. In the event that more funds are raised than needed to fully fund the project, the excess funds, if any, will be used to meet the most urgent needs of the ministry.
