For families living in rural Nicaragua, access to clean water affects everything. It determines whether they are sick or healthy and influences whether they can support their families. It can even be a matter of life or death. Insufficient access to safe, clean water is widespread, creating hardships for hundreds of thousands of people — but they are not alone in their fight.
Our on-site ministry partner, Amigos for Christ, has partnered with Cross Catholic Outreach to improve access to water. With high-quality systems that pipe clean water , families will no longer need to wonder whether their water is safe to drink. The life-threatening risk of waterborne diseases will be a thing of the past.

Amigos for Christ is dedicated to caring holistically for rural Nicaraguan families. Initiatives to provide clean water and improved sanitation make up a key component of its outreach. With our support, its life-changing ministry can ensure that clean water is piped directly into families’ homes and that children have access to safe bathrooms both at home and at school.
Lilia sees Nicaragua’s rural water crisis as a direct threat to her family.
Because water is not always available, there are days when simply maintaining basic hygiene is impossible. This has affected her son’s education and confidence.
“My child misses school a lot because I don’t even have water for him to bathe, much less to wash his uniform. It’s pretty hard,” she said.
Lilia’s own childhood was burdened by the constant need to find water. She would walk miles to reach the closest well and then make the return journey with a heavy container balanced on her head. Sometimes, she and her siblings would even beg for water along the main road. She does not want that life for her son.
“We always had to walk like this,” Lilia said, “carrying water since we were children, asking who could give us a can of water. And little by little we have been surviving.”

For Ana, filling a pot of water for cooking was anything but simple. Collecting enough drinking water for her entire family would take multiple trips. She, her husband and their three children worked together to provide for themselves.
Traveling long distances to water sources put Ana’s physical health at risk. It reduced the time she could dedicate to caring for herself and building relationships within her home and community. Instead, she was forced to focus on survival.
Now, their days of long trips to the river to do laundry are over. Water is now accessible to them directly in their home. Something we might take for granted on a day-to-day basis has been transformative. With their time and health restored, Ana and her family finally feel free!

We are a Catholic ministry that partners with bishops, priests, religious and lay workers to provide Food, Water & Health, Housing, Kids & Education, Women & Girls, Disaster Relief, Farming & Loans opportunities and the love of our Lord Jesus Christ to the poor and vulnerable in over 30 countries around the world.
Donations from this campaign will be used to cover any expenditures for this project incurred through June 30, 2027, the close of our ministry’s fiscal year. In the event that more funds are raised than needed to fully fund the project, the excess funds, if any, will be used to meet the most urgent needs of the ministry.
