SAFE HOUSING – DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Improve the health and safety of families around the world

More than 40% of Dominicans live below the poverty line, meaning many families lack safe and adequate housing. We believe safe housing is a foundational component to spiritually and materially transform the poor and their communities.

Cross Catholic Outreach is again partnering with Bishop Jose Grullon Estrella at Catholic Diocese of San Juan de la Maguana to build new homes in the rural areas of the Dominican Republic. These new homes provide much needed privacy, personal security, and safety from inclement weather.

The new homes being built in partnership with Bishop Jose Grullon Estrella will provide privacy, personal security and safety from inclement weather. The homes use a low-cost, durable design that has proven effective in sheltering poor families and withstanding powerful storms. Each home is:

  • Typically 378 sq. ft with three bedrooms.
  • Constructed from a prefabricated aluminum frame into which concrete plates are set.
  • Designed to survive earthquakes and 120 mph winds.
  • Sealed against water leaks.
  • 60% less expensive than concrete & rebar models.

Angel Salvador

Angel, his wife and four children live on a hilltop in the dusty outskirts of Azua in the Dominican Republic. They currently live in a home that doesn’t stand up well to rainstorms.

Concerned for his family, Angel saved what he could and bought rebar and concrete blocks to build a better house. When emergencies arose, Angel found himself having to sell the materials to cover other expenses.

Angel’s family will be among 110 Dominicans receiving new homes through the partnership between Cross Catholic Outreach and the Diocese of San Juan de la Maguana. When Angel heard the news, he was deeply moved and began to clear the way for the construction and the new blessing to come.
