Build houses. Renew dignity. Restore hope in communities.

Provide safe housing to poor families around the world

Your generous gift will empower our Catholic partners to provide safe homes for those who are either homeless or living in crumbling shacks. Donations to our General Housing Fund go toward building new houses, repairing existing ones or providing safe shelter in another critical way. These donations also equip us to respond quickly when emergency housing situations arise.

Last year alone, our partners built 400 houses,

sheltering more than 2,000 men, women and children.

Through our network of trusted Catholic ministry partners, your gift will help support the efforts of our ministry partners. This summer, help Cross Catholic Outreach welcome more families home in the name of Christ!

In developing countries, many poor families have lived without safe shelter for generations. In many of these cases, parents and their children are crowded into one-room shacks made out of sticks, discarded plastic or metal sheets, scrap lumber and cardboard, with no plumbing or electricity. These homes are not secure from bad weather, vermin or intruders. Trapped in desperate circumstances, it’s easy for families to feel hopeless with no solutions in sight.

Cross Catholic Outreach empowers ministries in developing countries that are building or repairing houses for families in need. Dignified housing is critical to health, well-being and overall transformation. When a family moves out of a broken down shack and into a safe and sturdy house, they no longer fear storms and their health and hygiene immediately improve. Long-term, secure housing has the potential to change the standard of living for generations to come.

Restoring Dignity One Family at a Time

Rebeca and her family stand in front of their dilapidated former home.
Rebeca’s story

Rebeca Maradiaga Torrez is a single mother of two small children. Living in the village of El Guayabal, Nicaragua, she makes a small salary of $100 a month as a housekeeper — barely enough to put food on the table. Her family lived with her mother in a dilapidated shack, hardly a place to raise children. The conditions were unsafe and unsanitary — leaving the family vulnerable to intruders and illnesses.

But thanks to supporters like you, Rebeca and her children finally have a safe place to call home. Their Rainbow Network house has sturdy walls, a durable roof, a lockable door, electricity and a sanitary latrine. Her story is what’s possible when Catholics come together in the name of Christ to provide safe housing!

Impact of a New, Safe House

Rainbow Network house illustration

A solid roof protects from storms, water damage and sun exposure.

Sturdy walls provide security and protect from outside predators and vermin.

A concrete foundation makes a house more durable and also improves health, hygiene and cleanliness.

A lockable door provides protection from intruders. People are able to sleep peacefully knowing they are safe and secure.

A safe place to live releases families from the struggle to survive and puts them in an environment where they can better their lives!

More Than Safe Shelter

Your gift will build houses for families in need around the world, but providing safe shelter is more than new construction.
Here’s an example of the types of projects you support with your gift …

  • Build safe concrete houses with durable roofs in Haiti, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mozambique, Grenada and the Philippines.
  • Build a new apartment complex for women who have been displaced by violent conflict in Ethiopia.
  • Build safe kitchens for families in Nicaragua who suffer from smoke inhalation.
  • Provide safe housing for young women attending college in Guyana.
  • Provide shelter for women fleeing domestic abuse in Guatemala.
  • Repair existing houses in Haiti, Belize, Grenada and Ethiopia.

Cross Catholic Outreach

Our mission is to mobilize the global Catholic Church to transform the poor and their communities materially and spiritually for the glory of Jesus Christ. Your gift empowers us to serve the poorest of the poor by channeling life-changing aid through an international network of dioceses, parishes and Catholic missionaries. This cost-effective approach helps break the cycle of poverty and advance Catholic evangelization.

Proceeds from this campaign will be used to cover any expenditures incurred through June 30, 2021, the close of our ministry’s new fiscal year. In the event that more funds are raised than needed to fully fund the project, the excess funds, if any, will be used to meet the most urgent needs of the ministry.
