Agriculture Impact Update

Income-Generating Activities for Impoverished Families

It’s estimated that 828 million people worldwide suffer from hunger. That’s a tragic reality, but in developing countries where poor families rely on subsistence farming to survive, improvements to agriculture can help solve the problem. That’s why Cross Catholic Outreach supports programs that train families in how to improve crop yields and give them a firsthand experience of stewarding God’s creation.

Thanks to faithful supporters like you, Cross Catholic Outreach was able to support 14 agriculture projects in six countries. This included funding a school lunch program at the Kobonal Mission School, where parents helped farm the land to produce the corn, beans and other basic ingredients needed to feed 1,600 primary school students. Your support also helped bless families in the Diocese of Santa Rosa de Lima in Guatemala. There, 249 farming families were given agriculture training and supplies.

People living in extreme poverty must often make difficult decisions simply to survive. In Haiti, for example, many cross the border to the Dominican Republic to find work. Sadly though, most fail to find gainful employment and end up in settlements called bateys, where they endure hard labor in the surrounding sugarcane fields.

Thanks to generous U.S. Catholics, the Batey Relief Alliance was able to develop, finance and provide technical support to 120 women living in depressed batey communities. They successfully implemented market-oriented agricultural development strategies that were tailored specifically to those in need. This allowed once-struggling women to learn improved ways to farm their parcels of land and increase their income.

Donations from this campaign will be used to cover any expenditures for this project incurred through June 30, 2025, the close of our ministry’s fiscal year. In the event that more funds are raised than needed to fully fund the project, the excess funds, if any, will be used to meet the most urgent needs of the ministry.
