Microenterprise Impact Update

Helping the Poor Achieve Greater Self-Sufficiency

At Cross Catholic Outreach, we ultimately want families to become self-sufficient so they no longer need to rely on others for support. Our microenterprise programs play an important role in achieving this goal. They allow our ministry partners to offer job training and equip individuals with the resources to launch small businesses or be more productive when working the land.

In 2023, U.S. Catholics supported 10 of these microenterprise programs in seven countries, empowering families to make the most of their God-given potential. For example, last year, you and other generous Catholics funded social and economic empowerment programs in Ethiopia that provided women with training, startup capital and mentorship to launch small businesses. In Haiti, we partnered with Father Glenn Meaux’s Kobonal Haiti Mission to empower more than 1,000 people with small-business loans.

In the remote communities surrounding Chinandega, Nicaragua, poor families endure serious economic hardships. To survive, they must often take grueling jobs in the fields or plant crops on rented land. It’s exhausting work, and most of the families earn less than $1.50 a day.

Amigos for Christ, our ministry partner in Chinandega, has developed a highly effective way to help Nicaraguan families overcome their financial challenges. It involves supplying them with livestock — in this case, pigs — and providing them with training to raise the animals. At the end of a five-month period, the beneficiaries are able to sell the pigs for a profit on which to live comfortably — as well as invest in the future of their children.

During the 2023 fiscal year, Amigos for Christ helped nine families grow their pig-farming businesses. Each farmer began with 25 piglets and, through the year, earned a cumulative total of $88,647 in sales! All families saw an increase in their household income and have been able to reinvest in their businesses for the next cycle. They praise God for this life-transforming opportunity!
