Children are getting ready to return to school, both here in the United States and in Haiti. Haitian kids begin classes about two weeks later than schoolchildren in America. But no matter where a child goes to school, whether he or she is rich or poor, the excitement over a new school year is universal.
She couldn’t take it anymore. Sixteen-year-old Suyen had been helping her ill mother with housework and her father with farming — plus riding her bicycle to school 12½ miles each way. Something had to give.
Our project officers must travel to incredibly remote places to reach some of the projects we support—but they’re well worth the effort. For instance, Claudio, who covers Latin American projects, describes his recent journey to a boarding school in the mountains of Arequipa, Peru. After a long flight, he rode a crowded bus for 12 hours until it literally reached the end of the road.
