En route to a rural village in western Nicaragua, we pulled over to talk to a man and woman on a horse-drawn cart headed the same way. When you see these sorts of sights along the road in Latin America, you don’t think much of it… until you realize what they’re doing.
Thanks from Peru!
The students at the Home Incarnate Word boarding homes in Cotahuasi, Peru, gave us an enthusiastic welcome with lots of music and home-made signs. We were serenaded in the afternoon and later that evening with songs in both Spanish and Quechua – the local indigenous language. Then as we departed with Fr. Jose Paz, the kids ran outside in the rain to wish us a final farewell.
Aggressive Expansion
Until recently, this entire wing of the Santa Maria de Huachipa school did not exist. The high demand for education in this bleak Peruvian slum has forced continuing, rapid expansion. Case-in-point: student enrollment has jumped from 650 to 900 in just one year!
Vision From the Slums
“Where there is no vision, the people perish.” The famous KJV translation of Proverbs 29:18 may invoke nausea as often as inspiration, because so many leaders misapply it to promote their personal agendas.
Help Women, Fight Poverty
Last week marked International Women’s Day, a global celebration of women and their contributions to society. This year’s celebration was especially meaningful because it also marked the holiday’s 100th anniversary.
The Impact of Education
Proverbs 22:6 offers this advice: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” This verse offers some Godly insight into just how impactful education can be in the life of a child. At Cross Catholic, we see that impact every day as we receive success stories from the education programs we support for poor children around the world.
